Lights, Camera, Water, and a 4-year old

The other day I had an interesting assignment to create a photograph for a poster that would show how volunteers had built a well that brought clean, drinking water to a small village in El Salvador. In a backyard in Montclair, under a tent that controlled the ambient light, I set a water pipe on a lightstand, ran a hose to the pipe, put an orange gel over the flash to simulate afternoon sun, and had the most wonderful little boy cup his hands under the "new well". Oscar was a real trouper: he was standing on a picnic table to get to the correct height; he had to crouch and hold his hands steady; and the water was COLD!
