She's one Tough Mudder!

Our new studio assistant may be a bit tougher than just when you meet her at the studio! This past weekend, Jerrica ran the Tough Mudder Tri-State in Englishtown, NJ. It is a challenging obstacle course, called “probably the toughest one-day event on the planet”. She ran one of the longest courses at 12.09 miles through 32 obstacles, including being fully submerged in ice cold water, climbing a muddy mountain, crawling underneath barbed wire, running through fire, and trudging through waist deep mud water. The event is just as much of a physical challenge as it is a mental one. But not only is it an accomplishment to finish; each participant is also helping a great cause. All of the proceeds and donations are given to the Wounded Warriors Fund. (And no we don’t mean all of the “tough mudders” that are limping around after the event!) Even after all of the bruises, scrapes, and sprained muscles, Jerrica says that she and her team are planning on competing in the Pennsylvania event this coming May, as well as the Tri-State next year again in November. “It was an amazing experience! My team definitely had a ton of fun the entire time. We were cracking jokes, smiling and laughing constantly, even throughout the torturing obstacles, and we grew a bond that could not be described. Even if I am still limping around, I can not wait to do the next one!”

A City Hall Elopement

What do you do when you don't want to be a Bridezilla or participate in Bride Wars? Get thee to City Hall! Your wedding day can be as easy as a Disneyland ride (with a waiting queue and a souvenir photo backdrop to boot). If you want to have complete control over your wedding, many people simply choose to elope.

I accompanied Kamilah and Keith to New York's City Hall as their wedding photographer when they decided to elope, and was amazed at just how much fun it was. It was fascinating to see the range of different ages, different ethnicities and religions, and all the various fashions that passed through the Marriage Bureau that day...couples getting married in jeans, to couples in full blown wedding and bridesmaids gowns. One couple had even come all the way from Ireland to say their vows and spend the weekend in NYC (apparently getting married in Ireland is complicated and it's easier in The Big Apple).

Lights, Camera, Water, and a 4-year old

The other day I had an interesting assignment to create a photograph for a poster that would show how volunteers had built a well that brought clean, drinking water to a small village in El Salvador. In a backyard in Montclair, under a tent that controlled the ambient light, I set a water pipe on a lightstand, ran a hose to the pipe, put an orange gel over the flash to simulate afternoon sun, and had the most wonderful little boy cup his hands under the "new well". Oscar was a real trouper: he was standing on a picnic table to get to the correct height; he had to crouch and hold his hands steady; and the water was COLD!

Montclair Photographer's Kitty Needs A Name!

It has come to my attention that my studio manager Kate has now had her cat for a whole year and not yet given her an official name. The little black and white kitty was adopted from Montclair's PAWS last April, and as a gift, we thought we'd poll our readers for a suitable moniker to save the feline from a future identity crisis (and years of cat therapy, naturally.)

Kate's a photographer and graphic designer here in Montclair. She describes her cat as "cute, fluffy, and kind of a jerk." Her favorite things include eating houseplants, chasing shoelaces, and waking up really early. (The cat's favorite things, that is. Kate prefers her houseplants uneaten.)

The studio was a madhouse of models, stylists, publicists, and cell phone cameras yesterday during Alisa Maria's high fashion photo shoot for her debut mens' fur line. Alisa herself had modeled the womens' line just a few weeks earlier, and finally the gentlemen had their turn. Handsome, personable, and professional, Alisa's team breezed through each look with the greatest of ease, and we quickly racked up a number of winning shots.

"My Video Got HOW Many Hits?"

We always love to brag about our clients, so we were pretty thrilled to learn that our little buddy Charlotte made the national news yesterday on NBC, when anchor Brian Williams showed off her presidential knowledge from a recent Youtube video.

We've gotten to know Charlotte over the years, from her very first portrait session as a newborn, and I can tell you we've been constantly floored by her comprehension and awareness. It's wonderful to see the world learning what a smart cookie she is - and I doubt this is the last time we're going to see Charlotte making headlines!

Sunny and Cold in Ringwood

I finally got out on my cross-country skis this weekend. On Sunday it was cold, but sunny and I headed up to Ringwood State Park in northern New Jersey for an afternoon jaunt. Ringwood is the former Morris estate dating back to the mid-1700s. The property is beautiful with a huge manor house with 9 chimneys and a pond with a dam (see photo) and a colonial-era cemetery. This being my first day on the slats I didn't yet have my ski-legs, and, admittedly, the conditions were just passable...we need some more snow to make it perfect. The news is reporting a big storm later this week, so there's hope for more white stuff.

2010 - A Year In Review

Well, the fact that this is the first blog post in two months should tell you how crazy things get around here at this time of year. Now that the dust has settled, holiday cards have been mailed, and everyone's gift portraits are wrapped and under the tree, we can finally settle down with some milk and cookies and take stock of 2010. It was a fantastic year of photography. We met lots of new clients, and welcomed back many familiar faces as well. (It's always a shock to see how much kids grow and change between portrait sessions!) We installed a state-of-the-art lighting system in the studio to get the most out of every minute of photography. (It's working!) We finally joined in the Facebook revolution (and learned how gratifying those little thumbs-ups can be).

And the photographs. Of course, the photographs! I wish we could show you everything - but of course, that would take a full twelve months to watch. So here's a three minute glimpse into 2010 at Phil Cantor Photography.

A Salute to Cynthia

Don't let Cynthia's calm demeanor in these photographs fool you. This woman doesn't sit still for a minute. The Montclair native is a Lt. Colonel in the Army and I was lucky enough to catch her in the studio in between her recent overseas assignments and an upcoming move to Texas. She's lived in dozens of places and had plenty of adventures along the way - AND she just had a milestone birthday. What better way to mark this eventful time in her life, she thought, than to have some professional portraits done? And so here we have... a celebration of Cynthia.

Cynthia, like so many of us, was mainly concerned about how her weight would appear in the photographs. The camera adds ten pounds, as everyone says. But what they DON'T tell you is that a skilled photographer knows all kinds of tricks - with lighting, with posing, with clothing - to minimize features that their clients are uncomfortable with and play up their best assets. Cynthia has a great smile and beautiful skin, so the goal was to draw attention to her lovely face and create some high-drama portraits.

"I'd hoped to lose some weight beforehand, but hadn't quite gotten there by the time my session date came around. But the photographs turned out great! I was nervous posing at first, but Phil made me feel comfortable and made it fun. It felt like the day was dedicated just to me. Nothing But Blue Skies

One of the greatest things about this job is the variety of people I get to interact with on a daily basis. Getting to meet and chat with people from every occupation and walk of life is truly a gift. Not to mention being a part of families' lives for the most exciting and emotional moments, from weddings to births, bar mitzvahs to graduations.

Megan and Lance are no exception. Lance is an engineer, and you may recognize Megan from her position as a CBS meteorologist. They recently welcomed little baby Lana into the world, and lucky me - I got to photograph their brand new family. They opted to capture Lana's first year of life in the Baby Collection - a series of three portrait sessions, as a newborn, at six months, and at one year old.

This was my favorite image from their newborn session. Here's what Megan had to say afterward...

"Lana was only a month old at the time, and I was concerned about how she would hold up through the session. But I had nothing to worry about - you were wonderful, and moved quickly so that we got great results in a “newborn friendly” timeframe! My husband and I loved how comfortable we felt during the session. Because we were so at ease, Lana felt comfortable too, and the pictures turned out great! I was amazed that you got the best shots of her possible. I couldn’t manage it at home with my camera, and all the time in the world! ”

The family recently returned for Lana's six month session. Both Megan and Lance just lit up every time they looked at their daughter - it would be hard to find a prouder set of parents! Thanks for another great session!

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene...

The weather lately has been just perfect for outdoor shoots. I took advantage of some great natural light for a recent family portrait session at the Verona, NJ home of Gail and her two kids, Matt and Katie. (And a sweetheart of a lap dog, Buggy.) The backyard was full of photographic potential, from the landscaped garden, to the sparkling blue pool, to the stone steps. I switched scenes frequently, and got a great selection of portraits.

Gail was a little reluctant to jump in front of the camera, but some pleading from her kids helped me win her over.

Katie and Matt, both recent graduates, head off in different directions in the fall - Katie's finished with college and moving to California, while Matt will be playing ice hockey for his college in Maine. Buggy's plans are unconfirmed at this time, but rumored to include 'lazing by the pool' and 'watching TV'.

Time to Play Ball (and photograph it too)

Regulars at Edgemont Park may have noticed a steady stream of kids in sports uniforms converging on the boat house over the past few weeks. Yes, it's that time of year again - sports team photography is upon us! We've gotten to take advantage of some beautiful spring weather and a scenic backdrop of the pond at Edgemont Park to create this year's round of baseball, softball, and t-ball memorabilia. Player trading cards were again the hot ticket item of the season, along with player portraits and team photos. I had the opportunity to photograph all of the traveling teams in one giant group - good thing I remembered to bring the studio ladder!

Of Dallas and Dentists

Whew! It's been a crazy couple of weeks here at the studio. In between sports team photo days and photographing at the Montclair High School junior prom, I managed to sneak away for a surprise assignment in Dallas, Texas.

I've known Moyo and Shola ever since I photographed their wedding, five years ago (above). They are wonderful, genuine people and it was a sad day when we lost them to Texas. We did keep in touch over the years, and when they had their first child, Temi, they managed to find the time to have a portrait done while they were back in New Jersey visiting family.

You can imagine how flattered I was to receive a call from husband Shola, wanting to fly me out to Dallas as a SURPRISE gift to his wife, to document her graduation from the Texas A&M, Baylor School of Dentistry - a great accomplishment.

The celebration weekend was truly a family affair. Shola and Moyo are from Lagos, Nigeria, and family members from around the world flew in for the celebration. The colorful traditional garments were a treat to photograph, and it was an honor to meet so many of their extended family.

Congratulations Moyo, and thank you Shola for inviting me to document this momentous occasion!

Alexandra's Name in Lights

Well, the weekends are getting more and more packed now that event season is underway. Warmer weather brings people together for all kinds of celebrations - parties, graduations, weddings, reunions - and this past weekend I was able to attend the Bat Mitzvah of lovely Alexandra.

Alex's father is Israeli by way of Spain, and has spent many years in Europe. As a result he's fluent in several languages, and gave a speech in English, Hebrew, Spanish, and French. Alex herself mixed Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions in her ceremony at Temple Emanuel in Woodcliff Lake.

It was certainly a global celebration. The Venetian in Garfield rivaled the U.N. that evening - citizens of 40 different countries were in attendance.

I am certain that this young lady will soon make her own mark on the world - congratulations, Alexandra!

Adult School of Montclair turns 75

We all know how important education is, especially in a bumpy economy. That's why I was thrilled to be able to contribute to the Adult School of Montclair's upcoming 75th anniversary celebration. The Adult School of Montclair has been a fantastic community resource for those looking to hone their professional skills as well as trying out something just for fun. (Japanese flower arranging, anyone?) The celebration, on May 13 at Mayfair Farms, is honoring three ASM volunteers for their many years of service. I was lucky enough to be asked to photograph all three recently in my portrait studio.

Gene Bloch's association with the Adult School began in 1975. He served as board member and assistant treasurer, then finance chair. While he was board president (1983-1985), the Friends of the Montclair Adult School of Montclair was established. He moved on to chair the catalog and technology committees. Along the way, he taught some of ASM's first computer classes.

Marion Buchner became a volunteer in 1980, after retiring from a career as a high school librarian in Newark. She has served ASM as president (1985-86) as well as chair of the curriculum and nominating committees. She volunteers in the office, writes and edits course descriptions, and is an active participant in many classes.

Jean Kidd became the second executive director of the Montclair Adult School in 1975. Under her leadership, the school expanded, both in the number of courses offered and the student body. Although Kidd retired as director in 1982 to become a full-time college student, she has remained attached to ASM. Joining the board, she served as secretary, vice president, and president, and has also chaired the curriculum and the nominating committees.

Assignment: Ethicon Community Works Day

Last week, I was commissioned by Lehner & Whyte, the well-known Montclair design firm, to photograph a campaign for Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, at their headquarters in Somerville. Ethicon makes sutures and other medical devices and every year they allow employees to take a day off and work on community volunteer projects. These portraits, which all used real employees, will be used to promote the June date.

Below are two of the portraits. Here's a peak behind the scene:
To illustrate Michael's project planting bushes and trees, I set Michael in a patio behind their reception area and I used a long lens to blur the trees in the background. This focused attention on his smiling face as he leaned on a shovel we brought. I shot wide open with a 200 mm lens to have the least depth-of-field as possible. The natural light was augmented with a reflector to brighten his eyes and the shadows on his face.

Ileana, who sings at a local senior citizen center, was photographed indoors with a portable white background. The lighting came from a flash strobe that I bounced off the ceiling in the headquarter's lobby. The microphone is a prop and the background was added using PhotoShop after the shoot was finished.

Both subjects, Michael and Ileana, were not used to being models, but they really got into the spirit and helped make a very stylish ad for Ethicon's Community Works Day.

A Cure for These Rainy Spring Days

It's been a chilly, wet spring in Montclair so far this year. Though I couldn't be happier to see leaves on the trees and tulips on every corner, the view is just not the same from under an umbrella and overcoat.
It's times like these I start looking forward to summer, and some of my favorite family portrait sessions... beach days! There's nothing better than being able to spend a day photographing a family on vacation at the Jersey shore, when everyone (including the photographer) is relaxed and carefree. You can't ask for a better backdrop than blue skies and sandy dunes. Here's a selection of some of my favorites to help you get through the cold and the clouds. 90 degree days are just around the corner!

Senior Portrait Season

Camera Shy? No Way!

Proof that a Phil Cantor portrait session just might be the most fun a kid could have on a Friday afternoon? You be the judge!

We had another wonderful Baby Collection session in the studio last week, and I had the honor of hosting four generations of the family. Rosa is... get ready for it... little Johnny's GREAT grandmother! Can you believe it? She looks fabulous.

I was happy to see that Johnny had kept the same hairstyle from our first session when he was a month old..

And finally, Johnny with his beautiful mother Christin. It's hard to believe it's been over three years since I photographed her wedding... time certainly flies! I can't wait to see what's in the next chapter of their family story.

Two Little Munchkins

Had a great shoot recently with Ava and Olivia - two of the most cheerful, good-natured little girls you'll ever meet. Not only were they great in front of the camera, but their hilarious commentary kept everyone in stitches. This was Olivia's 1 year old session for the Baby Collection package, which consists of three sittings during a child's first year - as a newborn, at six months, and at a year. It's always exciting to see how much change happens in that year, as a child grows and develops into their own unique person.

The Highlawn Pavilion: Christine DeMattia to Joseph Kwiatek

Here's a couple of scenes from Christine and Joe's beautiful wedding at the Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange on Saturday. Being so close to New York City, the venue allowed for some stunning photographs with a backdrop of twilight over Manhattan.

It's not every day you get to see a beautiful bride strolling down the streets of Elizabeth. The neighborhood got treated to a wedding procession from the bride's home to St. Anthony's Church, a few short blocks away.

Jack Block, Professor 1924-2010

Jack Block, my mother's brother, my uncle, died a few weeks ago. He was a Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley and was famous in psychology circles for one of the longest running longitudinal studies (studying the same focus group over many years, in this case 32 years). He was famous in my family as a strong, handsome man of erudite tastes and a sharp intellect.

Jack Block, Who Studied Young Children Into Adulthood, Dies at 85

Jack Block, a prominent psychologist of personality who in 1968 began studying a group of California preschoolers and for decades kept watch as they moved from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood, died on Jan. 13 at his home in El Cerrito, Calif. He was 85.

The cause was complications of a spinal cord injury he suffered 10 years ago, his daughter Susan Block said.

At his death, Professor Block was an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, where he had taught from 1957 until his retirement in 1991.

Professor Block’s project began with more than 100 3-year-olds in the San Francisco area. He studied them again when they were 4, 5, 7, 11, 14, 18, 23 and, finally, 32, when the study ended. Much of the work was conducted with his wife, Jeanne Humphrey Block, a collaborator until her death in 1981.

While other longitudinal studies examined the effects of I.Q. or social class on later life, the one by the Blocks focused on psychological makeup. At bottom, the questions they asked were these: What makes people turn out as they do, and to what extent can adult personality be predicted by childhood temperament?

“It was probably the only one of its kind that started with such young children,” Per F. Gjerde, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said of the Blocks’ study. Nowadays, Professor Gjerde said, “you would start at birth, but in 1968, age 3 was a very, very early beginning.”

Investigating the ways in which subjects’ early lives informed their later ones, the Blocks looked at issues like childhood responses to parental divorce, adolescent drug use and adult political affiliation.

In a 1986 study, for instance, they examined members of the original group whose parents eventually divorced. Conducted with Professor Gjerde, the study upended the received wisdom that divorce in and of itself causes disruptive behavior in children.

Instead, the authors found, children from the divorced families — in particular the boys — had displayed antisocial behavior years before the divorce took place. In other words, the boys’ behavior, with the stresses on family life it entailed, could have been a cause of divorce as well as a consequence.

A 1990 study, by Professor Block and Jonathan Shedler, found that teenagers who experimented with drugs in a limited way tended to be better adjusted than those who either used drugs habitually or abstained entirely.

Jacob Block, always called Jack, was born in Brooklyn on April 28, 1924. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford in 1951.

Besides his daughter Susan, Professor Block is survived by two other daughters, Jody Block and Carol Block; a son, David; and four grandchildren.

His books include “Lives Through Time” (Bancroft, 1971; with Norma Haan).

One of Professor Block’s studies drew particular notice in the news media. Published in The Journal of Research in Personality in 2006, it found that subjects who at 3 years old had seemed thin-skinned, rigid, inhibited and vulnerable tended at 23 to be political conservatives. On the other hand, 3-year-olds characterized as self-reliant, energetic, somewhat dominating and resilient were inclined to become liberals.

Pundits’ responses to the study ranged from enthusiastic approval to caustic dismissal, depending on the politics of the critic.

After Cezanne

Over the holiday weeks, I had the pleasure of seeing two wonderful art exhibits, which have both since closed. "Cezanne and the Modernists" at the Montclair Art Museum was an aggregation of the effect that Cezanne had on his contemporary painters, sculptors and photographers, as well as those that followed him. He was one of the first of the abstractionists, and the major innovators of the abstract modern style. He affected everybody, including Picasso, Braque, and Arshile Gorky.

In fact, the second show I went to was the Arshile Gorky retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Armenian-born American artist came of age after Cezanne's death, but his early work was heavily influenced by his French predecessor. Even though he was dead, Gorky was said to have "dialogued" with Cezanne by studying and painting (I say copying) Cezanne's actual work.

Now it is my turn. I found a cutting board laid out with fruit by my pal Arthur Liebersohn, so I dialogued with Cezanne, too.

Mummer's Parade, Philadelphia

I have always wanted to see the Mummer's Parade and this year I finally made it. It is held every New Year's Day in the center of Philadelphia and has been around for over 100 years. Around 10,000 heavily costumed participants march the three miles up Broad Street from South Philly to City Hall. Reminiscent of New Orlean's Mardi Gras, the marchers work all year making elaborate costumes (many of which are quite politically incorrect). The march is made up of the various clubs that spend thousands of dollars every year to build floats and design costumes. There does not seem to be any other purpose for the parade (such as a fundraiser for needy children) other than to have a good time and to perform in make-up and costume.

As the parade wound down, I found my way to the staging area where all the guys were packing up and breaking down their costumes, adding another chapter to the picture story.

I was struck by the wonderfully gaudy colors and the friendliness of the marchers, who all enjoyed having their picture taken.

A Major Award for Phil Cantor

I recently was chosen by the readers of theKnot.com, the foremost wedding website as one of the "BEST OF WEDDINGS" for Photography for 2010 for northern New Jersey. An independent research company conducted a secret survey of theKnot's subscribers about their favorite wedding professionals...I didn't even know the survey was being done!

I am pleased that all of my hard work and the work of my photographers was honored in this way. As one of the first three photographers bringing the Photojournalistic style to New Jersey, this award is further validation that the PJ style strikes such a resonant chord with Garden State couples.

First Snow Fall 2009

I awoke to snow on the ground this Sunday morning, so I dug out my cross-country skis and headed for a golf course in Wayne, NJ. Unfortunately, it turned out that the report of enough snow to ski on was wishful thinking, so I got my hiking boots and camera and went up to the beautiful Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange. The branches were heavy with snow, often bending over to block the trail. When the sun came out and hit these leaves, it made for a magical scene of snow on green leaves and red berries in the background.

I'm still hoping for enough snow next week so I can get my "ski legs".

Fall Hike in the New Jersey Highlands

On Sunday, Nov 22, I lead a group of friends to the top of the High Point of the Wyanokies, one of my favorite hikes in northern New Jersey. I've probably climbed this mountain about 6 or 7 times. The woods was a carpet of leaves and the weather was mild enough to walk without a jacket. From the top, there was a 360 degree view of the Wanaque Reservoir, nearby summits, and Manhattan clearly visible 40 miles away.

One of my main missions on this hike was to break in my brand-new boots. The week before my trusty old Salomon boots essentially disintegrated on the Overlook Rock trail. What was so odd was that I didn't notice any excessive wear on the boots prior to the hike and during the hike, BOTH boot fell apart within 30 minutes.

The bottoms fell off and I had to hike back to the car with absolutely no traction and stopping to pull twigs and rocks from between my toes because of the big hole in the bottom of the sole.

HALLOWEEN Portraits for Food Pantry

On Halloween day, a parade of cowboys, Snow Whites, vampires and monkeys came through the studio for their annual Halloween Portrait. I had a blast getting all these scary characters to smile for my camera. And, the best part is that it was all for a good cause. Patients of Courage assignment

Tonight I just returned from the third leg of my current assignment for Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Ethicon is the leading manufacturer of surgical sutures: those specialized needle and thread combinations that surgeons require.

Ethicon has commissioned me to photograph patients who are too busy with important projects to let major reconstructive surgery interfere with their remarkable work. Uday Hateem, having survived an assassination attempt in Iraq where he worked as a translator for Coalition forces, now volunteers as a translator for severely injured Iraqi children at the Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia for reconstructive surgery.

Janet Smith is a volunteer piano accompanist for her local high school's choir in Canton, Ohio. She did not let a cancer diagnosis and multiple surgeries stop her from getting back to work ASAP.

Abigail Hardin is a 19 year old college sophomore in Tuscaloosa, Alabama who travels around the state reading the book she wrote for children about a hippopotamus who had a birthmark on his face (just like Abigail).

The photographs will be used by Ethicon at the Association of Plastic Surgeons national convention in Seattle at the end of October.

Montclair photographer, PHIL CANTOR, celebrated the Grand Opening of his photography studio relocated to the historic Murdoch-Fairchild Building on Thursday, September 17, 2009. Montclair Mayor Jerry Fried, assisted by Town Councillors Rich Murnick, Kathryn Weller, Renee Baskerville, and Cary Africk and Business Improvement District President Erik Maran cut the red satin ribbon offically opening the renovated studio. The photography studio features the largest shooting area in Montclair, with 17 foot ceilings, a shooting balcony, a fireplace, two dressing rooms, and, rare for Montclair, lots of on-street parking close-by. Tribeca Film Festival

One of the benefits of living near New York is the proximity of cultural institutions. My son, Ethan, is an aficionado of movies, so this past weekend we went to the Tribeca Film Festival to see a new documentary called "The Burning Season." (http://www.theburningseasonmovie.com/). It is the story of a young Australian entrepreneur named Dorjee Sun who wants to establish a carbon trading scheme to save the rain forests around the world. After the movie, the entire audience was invited to a party where Ethan got to meet and chat with Dorjee.

While we were hanging around the movie theatre, we also game across the grand opening of "Rudo y Cursi" and their charismatic young stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who also starred together in "Y Tu Mama, tambien" from a few years ago. Both Ethan and I are great fans of this movie the work of Alfonso and Carlos Cuaron who wrote or directed these movies.

Needless to say, Ethan was very happy.

Cantor debuts at Yankee Stadium

For a baseball fan, Yankee Stadium is The Temple of Baseball. In fact, it is referred to as The Stadium. So, when I got called by graphic designer, Jeff Seaver (www.seaver.com) to shoot at the NEW Yankee Stadium, I thought I'd hit a home run!

The Stadium is grandiose. Limestone and marble with a MUCH larger than life feeling. There is nothing 'homey' about Yankee Stadium. Giant entry doors, a Great Hall with 3 story banners of Yankee legends. Chrome and steel everywhere. And, a brand-new Martini Bar!

My client fabricated and installed the majority of all the HANDRAILS in the stadium. I know it sounds mundane, but the hot-dipped galvanized pipes and the absolutely gorgeouse stainless steel rails keep fans moving safely up and down stairs and, more importantly, from falling on the field!

On December 20, Jen and Doug were married at St. Mary's Church in Pompton Lakes surrounded by a wall of giant indoor Christmas trees. The church and service were decorated for the holidays as well as for the wedding. Jen's nephew played a guitar solo during the service (as well as an amazing guitar riff at the party!). Speaking of the party, the reception was held at the Mayfair Farms in West Orange and it didn't take too long for the place to start rocking.

The folks at Crossed Keys Inn in Andover, NJ must be really happy today. The latest issue of New Jersey Bride Magazine hit the stands with the Inn on its cover. There's an 18 page section on bridal fashion all shot at one of the premier places for outdoor and tented weddings in northern New Jersey. I know the place very well having shot there more than any other photographer and every where you look there is a great place to take wonderful photojournalistic and creative photographs.

I have to say that it is a great place to get married. In fact, Phil Leo, one of my Senior Photographers, was married there in 2007.

The historic Frenchtown Inn was the setting for the November wedding of Anne and Joel. Anne is a teacher at the Montclair Kimberley Academy and Joel is the Director of New Media at NOW, the long running program on PBS.

The Inn, next to the Delaware River in western New Jersey, was an intimate setting for their wedding as they were surrounded by their family and friends.

Towards the end of the evening, Joel's 9-year old son captivated the gathering with a toast to his father and his bride that was as well composed and as mature as any best-man's speech that this photographer has witnessed. On second thought, his speech was MORE mature than 75% of best-man speeches!

Tom Lonergan and Judith Russell

In late November, two favorite people of mine got married at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Montclair, NJ. Tom is the Executive Director of the Montclair Business Improvement District (one the best run BID's in northern New Jersey) and Judith is a psychologist at Rikers Island.

I'm on the Board of Directors of the BID, so I am one of the many bosses Tom usually has to bow down to. But on his wedding day, Tom was the KING and Judith RULED!

Lots of BID folks were in attendance, the dancing was wild, the food great, and the couple were gorgeous. Their party was held at The Atrium in West Orange, NJ.

Pete Seeger

Yesterday, I was able to check off a portrait on my Life List. For a very long time, I have wanted to photograph Pete Seeger, one of America's greatest heroes. Born in 1919, he has been at the forefront of the peace movement, the environmental movement, the civil rights movement, and equal rights. Not to mention, he is considered one of the fathers of the Folk Song revival and he wrote, or co-wrote, "Where have all the flowers gone," "Guantanamera," "Turn, turn, turn," and "If I had a hammer."

New York State's Working Families Party is celebrating its 10th Anniversary on September 18 and they asked me to videotape a message from Pete, who would not be able to attend. Of course, I would take still portraits as well.

I had planned on taking my father along with me on this shoot, for no reason particularly, other than I thought they would get along. Sadly, my father died before I could set it up. So, I took my son, Ethan, and poetically, it balanced perfectly since Ethan is a budding filmmaker.

His home in Dutchess County is up a steep gravel road and reminded me of the many handbuilt homes of my friends in the Catskills. In fact, Pete and I talked a while about the mistakes we each made building our own homes. His homesite had a sweeping view of the Hudson River and one comes away knowing why he has spent three decades championing the cleanup of the River.

Pete Seeger is approachable and calm, dignified and contemplative. He has remained true to his mission to make a difference in the world.

My last two weddings were both at the Madison Hotel (I should have just booked a room!). On Saturday, July 12th, Jamie married Eric and on Sunday July 20, Stephanie married David. Despite being at the same venue each one was wonderfully unique.

Jamie and Eric had such a fun and interesting family-Eric's uncle married them- and it was such a treat photographing their energy.

David and Stephanie's wedding was full of deep emotion and incredible dancing, they can really move! It was a ton of fun, not to mention the Neil Diamond impersonator. I'll leave that one to your imagination though.

Alice Star Markham Cantor is Bat Mitzvah

Alice was Bat Mitzvahed this past Saturday at the Prospect Park Picnic House in Brooklyn. She was poised and practiced and gave a marvelous speech about the meaning of biblical Esther.

The ceremony was wonderful: over 30 family members and friends spoke or read poetry. Cantor Doug Cotler, a cousin of Alice's, officiated on the guitar and Alice charmed everyone, including Doug, with her amazing voice.

Sammy's Bar Mitzvah

Sammy Mellman's Bar Mitzvah is March 29, 2008. He is the son of musician Bob Mellman and artist Janice Belove. I first met Sammy, not in my role as photographer, but rather as a baseball umpire for the town of Montclair. Unfortunately, Sammy struck out the first time he came to bat when I was behind the plate. The next time he hit a double. Not bad!

Giclée: the ultimate in wall portraits

I have added Giclée to the list of beautiful wall portraits that I offer and I want to take a moment to answer some questions about Giclée, which means "spray" in French.

What is distinctive about Giclée Printmaking?
My Giclée prints are extensively worked on to be more dramatic than a regular portrait. They can be in color, though, I often choose to convert them to a strong black and white. They are produced on heavy weight fine art papers which impart a rich look and feel that cannot be duplicated on standard resin-coated photographic papers.

Do Giclée Prints require any special care?
Just like any piece of fine art, they should be kept from direct sunlight, extreme heat or humidity. Classic gallery-style display, matted and glassed with a simple frame will provide protection with an elegant look. They may be hung without glass protection because we use DuraFiber, which provides a waterproof, scuff-free finish.

Why are Giclée prints more expensive than standard photo lab prints?
The Giclée process is time intensive and requires expensive museum quality paper and archival inks.

The talk in the wedding community is about the demise of Celebration Studios, one of the largest "factory" type wedding photography studios around. Their impending bankruptcy has left hundreds of brides without their proofs or albums or even, a photographer for their 2008 wedding.

On a whim, I put a sign in the store window inviting folks to bring in their pets for a free photograph. First of all, I got lots of calls asking what the catch was. "I'm not kidding," I told the callers, "it's really free." When the day arrived, there was a line out the door of people and their pets. Denise Gebroe, who assists me is also a dog trainer and veterinary technician, and she was in charge of making the cats and dogs smile for the camera. It was so funny and silly and I look forward to doing it again. And, everyone got their free picture in the mail.

Norman Mailer, 1923-2007

Norman Mailer died on Saturday, November 10. He was 84. I photographed him, quite by accident, at his home in Brooklyn Heights. It was an accident because I was on an assignment for Lord & Taylor. The department store was giving its annual Rose Award to Mailer and I was documenting his life. I had already photographed his friends George Plimpton, Milos Forman, and Yitzhak Perlman. I was at his brownstone to photograph his wife when he unexpectedly came home (it was all supposed to be a big surprise). I have no idea what Mailer thought, but he did not take much notice of me and went to his kitchen table and started ripping open the day's mail. I like to think he was looking for royalty checks.

Phil Leo marries (finally)

My longtime friend and Senior photographer, Phil Leo, was married on September 23 to Amy Edelman. Phil, who has probably photographed over 200 weddings, was finally the groom. It was so much fun to be present at this momentous event, but also it was strange to be a photographer photographing a photographer.

Even though Phil knows all my tricks and techniques, he still managed to ignore me and let me make beautiful pictures of his wedding day. It's that time of year again!

Mid- summer is a popular time to start getting senior portraits taken. Recently I have been working with high school seniors in the area. Some seniors simply missed out on their school pictures, and others just wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary.

Andrea, from Verona High wanted something natural to capture her peachy complexion and free spirit. We took all sorts of shots outside, it was a beautiful day and the light seemed to cooperate perfectly.

Oliver, from Montclair High brought his guitar along for the shoot. We took a walk down to the railroad tracks and kept the shoot casual. In the end it was tough choosing just one, they all came out so differently!

Shereen, from Paramus Catholic missed her senior picture day because she was traveling though Egypt. Shereen's adventurous spirit and warm brown eyes really captured the camera. Even though it started to rain, we made it work.

I had a blast in each session, we got some really wonderful pictures out of those spontaneous moments. Just look at these faces!

Ready, Aim, Fire

After more than seven months of careful planning, the Montclair Police shoot finally took place yesterday. The project started almost by chance when I approached Police Chief Sabagh last fall with the idea of setting up a photo shoot to document the entire 2007 Montclair Police Department. The most recent photo of the entire department was taken in 1946, and Chief Sabagh agreed with me that it was time for a new one.

Roads blocked, extensive newspaper coverage in the Montclair Times and Star Ledger, and me commanding more than 100 officers with guns-- what more could I want in a photo shoot?

Lyla's day to shine

My weekend was spent photographing and celebrating Lyla's Bat Mitzvah. On Friday we headed off to shoot the portraits at the temple. The whole family was extremely prepared for the celebrations-- their Hebrew was impeccable (thanks to several years living in Israel) and Lyla had a live-in rabbi to help with her studies (her mother!). On Sunday it was time for the party-- a warm and down-to-earth affair, and I must mention that the Wilshire Grand put out a beautiful spread. Lyla herself was self composed, confident and dramatic, not to mention extremely photogenic.

I recently had a photo session with Luke, an adorable (and very well behaved!) 7-month old. He just finished his 2nd session in his baby collection package and it was amazing to see how much he has grown in the past few months. He can now sit up on his own, and I can't help but wonder how much he will grow before our next photo shoot. Here are some of the photos from both shoots:
